Paramount Theatre: da sfarzoso teatro a funzionale centro sportivo
Inaugurato nel 1928 come centro di intrattenimento, il Paramount Theatre ebbe una grande, seppur breve, fortuna artistica. Calcarono le scene di questo teatro, infatti, artisti del calibro di Ella Fitzgerald e Duke Ellington contribuendo alla diffusione della musica Jazz. Ma non solo: tantissimi artisti furono protagonisti di questo teatro, fino a che, nel 1960, fu chiuso.
Il bellissimo teatro accoglieva il proprio pubblico in sfarzosi ambienti rococò e contava più di 4.000 posti. Il sipario di 60 piedi circa era totalmente ricamato e decorato. Inoltre enormi lampadari e fontane inoltre rendevano il teatro un luogo veramente spettacolare e lussuoso.

Il 21 agosto 1921 il teatro abbassò definitivamente il sipario e venne acquistato dalla Long Island University che avviò una profonda e insolita ristrutturazione riaprendolo nel 1963. Il teatro riaprì con un finalità d’uso diversa e al tempo stesso aggregante: fu infatti convertito in un complesso sportivo con un campo di atletica e un campo da basket.
Nel 1975 il teatro subì un’altra ristrutturazione diventando così uno dei centri sportivi più belli e particolari degli Stati Uniti. Oggi il complesso sportivo ospita anche eventi accademici, convegni e conferenze. I soffitti sono riccamente testimoni del celebre passato dell’edificio.
